TOPEKA COLLEGIATE SCHOOL

Topeka Collegiate School was first known as the Shawnee Country Day School and was located in Pauline, Kansas. Topeka Collegiate is now known as Topeka Collegiate School and is located in the City of Topeka, Kansas. Some of the wealthy citizens of the Topeka area send their children to this private school.

Teacher Appreciation Award

The first Teacher Appreciation Award was given at the end of the 1994 school year. It was given to the teacher that the graduating 8th grade class considered the most dedicated teacher at Topeka Collegiate.

The photo below shows Mr. Larry Miller receiving one of the three that he received from the Topeka Collegiate 8th grade class between 1994 and when he left the school in 2001. Mr. Miller was awarded the Teacher Appreciation Award in 1996, 1997, and 1999.

During the years Mr. Miller was associated with Topeka Collegiate School he at times worked with students from pre-school to 8th grade. Some of the projects he used to motivate the students included: herpetology, photography, Kansas natural history, environmental action, water quality, the space program, and prehistoric Kansas.

Mr. Miller also traveled with students on dozens of field trips across Kansas and to many other states. The students were often involved with state and national research projects.

Mr. Miller and his wife Suzanne often took small numbers of students on field trips to learn about the natural world. The photo below is of Mr. and Mrs. Miller with three Topeka Collegiate students during a field trip to search for amphibians, reptiles, and turtles in the Flint Hills of Kansas.

Mr. Miller now teaches freshman biology at Northern Hills Junior High School.
